Trimble Applanix Receives ASPRS Outstanding Technical Achievement Award
Dr. Bruno Scherzinger, Corporate Technical Officer for Applanix, was recently presented with the Outstanding Technical Achievement Award (OTAA) from the foundation arm of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS). The presentation of the award took place at the ASPRS 2022 Annual Conference as part of GeoWeek February 6-8, 2022.
The purpose of the award is to honour the developers of specific breakthrough technology which results in major advances in the practice of photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems, or related geospatial sciences. Award criteria included economic and scientific impacts of the technological achievement to the geospatial profession, the overall practicality and usefulness, and originality.
The Award is in recognition of Dr. Scherzinger’s leadership of the team responsible for commercialization and implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-aided inertial navigation systems. This technology has become ubiquitous in remote sensing data collection and has led to more efficient and economical processing through the capture of exterior orientation parameters at the time of data acquisition using an integrated GNSS-Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) system. This type of system allows for Direct Georeferencing using a reduced amount of ground information to achieve accurate positioning of acquired data in real- or near real-time. Under Dr. Scherzinger’s direction, the Applanix team’s innovation and vision led to the private sector’s initial adoption and implementation of the technology and continues to spark innovation in this space by adapting to new sensors and platforms.
As a recognized authority on aided inertial navigation systems, Dr. Scherzinger has been instrumental in leading the Applanix team in adapting its systems to incorporate modern, efficient, and effective components. One recent application of note is Applanix’s work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Fall 2021 to respond to Hurricanes Henri and Ida using a system that incorporated direct GNSS-aided inertial georeferencing for disaster relief mapping.
Dr. Scherzinger and the Applanix team are grateful to be recognized as early industry leaders in the development and implementation of GNSS-aided inertial navigation systems by ASPRS, a leading organization and representative of the photogrammetry and remote sensing community.
